Membership
APALA offers several membership categories to suit the needs of members at various stages of their careers. Whether you’re a newly graduated student of landscape architecture or an experienced professional, we offer a category of membership to meet your professional needs.
Membership Categories

Student Member
Student membership is encouraged for individuals working toward a bachelors or masters degree in landscape architecture or an allied profession. There is no cost to become a student member of APALA. Student members may serve on committees and sit on the Board but are not eligible to vote or hold office.

Associate Member
Associate members have successfully completed an accredited program in landscape architecture, or in absence of such accreditation, at a school recognized by the Board, or at least seven years’ practical experience of increasing responsibility under the full-term supervision of a Full Member. Associate members must follow a Professional Development Plan (PDP) in order to obtain Full membership.

Full Member
Full members have successfully completed two years of Associate Membership and a Professional Development Plan (PDP) under the supervision of a Full member.

Full Member (Reciprocity)
Individuals who maintain Full membership with another component association of the CSLA are eligible to apply for Full membership via reciprocity. A letter of good standing from the alternate component association is required.

Life Member
Life Members are Full Members who have performed notable service in advancing the cause of landscape architecture and who are no longer practicing Landscape Architecture.

Honorary Member
Honorary Members are non-landscape architects who have performed notable service in advancing the cause of landscape architecture in the Atlantic Provinces. Honorary Members need to be nominated by a Full Member and must be approved by the Membership committee.

Affiliate Member
An Affiliate Member is interested in the profession of landscape architecture and has contributed to its study, appreciation or practice.

As an Associate Member, can I volunteer for committees or sit on the Board?
An Associate Member shall not be eligible to hold office, but shall be eligible to vote, serve on committees and sit on the Board. Associate Members have the right to speak at all meetings and are encouraged to participate in APALA committees, activities and to sit on the Board.
As an Associate Member, can I call myself a Landscape Architect?
An Associate Member shall not be entitled to use the title Landscape Architect nor use the abbreviation APALA after their name.
What title can I use?
An Associate Member shall be designated as an “APALA Associate” which designation shall not be abbreviated or changed in any way.
Do I get a stamp as an Associate Member?
Associate members shall not be issued the approved professional stamp and certificate of the Association.
Do I need to record experience during my Associate Membership period?
If you have the intention to apply for full membership in the future, you will need to log your experience.
Do I need to write the LARE to become a Full Member?
Yes, the completion of the LARE exams is a requirement of Full Membership with APALA. Please see the APALA Bylaws for current membership requirements in all categories.

To Apply you Must:
be of good character and adhere to the Association’s Code of Professional Conduct;
be enrolled in an accredited program in landscape architecture, or in absence of such accreditation, at a school recognized by the Board. Proof of enrollment is required in one of the following formats: student ID, transcript, proof of enrollment, or faculty letter.
To Apply:
Fill out the application form and send to admin@apala.ca along with your preferred proof of enrollment documentation.

To Apply you Must:
be of good character and adhere to the Association’s Code of Professional Conduct;
have successfully completed an accredited program in landscape architecture, or in absence of such accreditation, at a school recognized by the Board, or at least seven years’ practical experience of increasing responsibility under the full-term supervision of a Full Member;
have been endorsed by one Full Member of the CSLA.
be willing to complete a Professional Development Plan (PDP) in accordance with the PDP Policy.

Provide Proof of your Academic qualifications (degree only, transcripts are not required) then send to admin@apala.ca
Have your endorser (someone that you have known in a professional context for at least one year and who is a member of APALA/CSLA) fill out the Endorsement Form and send their form directly to admin@apala.ca
E-transfer your $25 non-refundable application fee to admin@apala.ca or mail a cheque to APALA mailbox

Once you have completed your three years of Associate Membership and your Professional Development Plan (PDP), you may now apply to become a Full Member.
Below is a list of the eligibility requirements and steps to become a Full Member; as well as the elements of that membership as defined by the APALA Bylaws.
To Apply you Must:
be of good character and adhere to the Association’s Code of Professional Conduct;
have successfully completed an accredited program in landscape architecture, and have completed the prescribed examination of the Association in accordance with the Examination Policy;
have completed three years of Associate Membership and completed a Professional Development Plan (PDP) in accordance with the PDP Policy;
have been endorsed by two Full Members of the CSLA; or
be a Full Member in good standing of another component of the CSLA, and meets all requirements of the current CSLA Reciprocity Full Membership Agreement.

Have two endorsers (people that you have known in a professional context for at least three years combined and who are members of APALA/CSLA) fill out and send the Endorsement Forms directly to admin@apala.ca

Be of good character and adhere to the APALA’s Code of Professional Conduct;
Be a member in good standing of another CSLA component association

Life Members are Full Members who have performed notable service in advancing the cause of landscape architecture and who are no longer practicing Landscape Architecture.
Upon the recommendation of the Membership Committee and at the discretion of the Board, such Full Member shall be named a Life Member of the Association.

Honorary Members shall be persons, other than landscape architects, who have performed notable service in advancing the cause of landscape architecture in the Atlantic Provinces.
Honorary Members need to be nominated by a Full Member and must be approved by the Membership committee.

An applicant fulfills the requirements for admission into APALA as an Affiliate Member where they:
are of good character and adhere to the Association’s Code of Professional Conduct;
are interested in the profession of landscape architecture and have contributed to its study, appreciation, or practice.
have been endorsed by one Full Member of APALA.

Former members of APALA may apply to reinstate their membership as outlined in the Membership Reinstatement Policy.
To apply for membership reinstatement:
Complete the Membership Reinstatement Application Form and submit to admin@apala.ca.
Pay a non-refundable $50.00 application fee via cheque or e-transfer to admin@apala.ca.
For Reciprocity members: provide a letter of good standing from a component association of the CSLA of which you are a member. Send to: admin@apala.ca
