Update on NLAA/APALA Lecture Series Event

The Public Lecture Series is an annual event hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Architects (NLAA) featuring national and international architects and urban designers. For the 2016 Lecture Series, APALA was invited to collaborate with the NLAA and hosted its first lecture on Thursday, October 13th at the LSPU Hall in downtown St. John’s, NL. The guest speaker invited by APALA was Virginia Burt, FCSLA, FASLA, of Virginia Burt Designs Inc.

The evening began with a brief informal discussion before continuing to the theatre to begin the lecture. The lecture was well-attended and included local landscape architects, planners, architects and many members of the public. Over the course of an hour, Virginia presented those in attendance with a snapshot of past and ongoing projects including one based in Nova Scotia’s Acadia Point, a previous CSLA award-winning project. Virginia’s review of her incredible body of work on healing gardens and sacred spaces corresponded nicely with this year’s theme of “For the Greater Good: Advocacy Through Design” and many left the lecture feeling refreshed and inspired. Feedback continued to roll in during the days after the lecture with many thoughtful and supportive comments being received.

Overall the event was a success and proved to be an excellent avenue to advance the practice and profession of landscape architecture in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada.
