LACF Update – October 2017


This week we head to the ASLA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, which is always an engaging and energizing opportunity to catch up with our many friends and supporters. We hope to see you at one of the LAF events and activities. Be sure to pick up your hot-of-the-press copy of The New Landscape Declaration: A Call to Action for the Twenty-First Century. The book launches at the conference and compiles big visions from a range of thought-leaders that will inspire and provoke the landscape architecture discipline for years to come.

We can’t wait to meet this amazing group of exceptional student leaders and recent graduates! Apply for 2018 Case Study Investigation (CSI) Program

Want to assess and document the benefits of high-performing landscape projects? LAF is accepting applications for the next CSI program, which will run Feb – Aug 2018. Faculty Research Fellows lead this unique research collaboration and receive funding to support a student Research Assistant. Practitioners apply with specific projects and are selected based on the quality of the project, potential to produce comprehensive quantified benefits, and the firm’s commitment to working with the research teams. Faculty Expressions of Interest are due Nov 3. Applications from firms are due Nov 30.

LAF Olmsted Scholars: Ready to Act, Part 2 and 3

Inspired by LAF’s 2016 Summit on Landscape Architecture and the Future and the New Landscape Declaration, a group of Olmsted Scholars produced their own response, focused on moving forward with deliberate actions to meet the ambitions set forth in the Declaration’s four calls to action.

LAF has been sharing their action plans through a series of blog posts. See their ideas for:

  • Action 2: We will work to cultivate a bold culture of inclusive leadership, advocacy and activism in our ranks.

Perspectives: Amir Gohar

LAF’s Perspectives series showcases landscape architects from diverse backgrounds discussing how they came to the profession and where they see it heading. This month we interviewed Amir Gohar, a recent PhD grad who has worked on planning and sustainable development with a variety of organizations across the Middle East and Africa. “Right now, we are in a moment that necessitates a radical shift in our practice, our thinking, and our approaches. An informed landscape architect is one that can adopt and encourage thinking across scales, across disciplines, and across institutions.”
