Membership requirements are set out in the APALA bylaws and summarized below for convenience. Inquiries and membership applications should be addressed to the Secretary-treasurer of APALA; the Membership Committee reviews all applications.
All applicants must be of good character and agree to be bound by the bylaws of the association and adhere to our Code of Professional Conduct, and pay an application fee and membership dues. Additional requirements for each category of membership are generally as follows:
Applicants must have successfully completed a professional program recognized by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, or approved by the APALA Board, and have completed at least three years in an approved landscape architecture apprenticeship program under the full term supervision of a member; or have completed at least seven years of practical experience of increasing responsibility in an approved landscape architecture apprenticeship program under the full-term supervision of a member, and be endorsed by two members of the APALA, and have maintained regular consultation, and a record of that consultation with their endorsers, and pass the prescribed examination of the association.
Full Membership (Reciprocal)
Applicants must be a member in good standing of another component of the CSLA, or a landscape architect registered to practice in another jurisdiction with registration requirements equivalent to those set out in the bylaws, and be endorsed by one member of APALA.
Applicants must have successfully completed a program in landscape architecture accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, or approved by the APALA Board, and be endorsed by one member of APALA.
Applicants must be enrolled in landscape architecture accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, or approved by the APALA Board.
Only full members in good standing may vote at meetings of the association. Full members in APALA, who are not life members, are eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. No separate application for membership in the CSLA is required.
