2018 Architecture Lecture Series Report

11/22/2018

The Path: Landscape architecture, learning, and reconciliation

The Public Lecture Series is an annual event hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Architects (NLAA) featuring national and international architects and urban designers. For the third consecutive year, APALA was invited to collaborate with the NLAA and co-hosted a lecture on October 12th at the Quidi Vidi Plantation in St. John’s, NL. The guest speaker invited by APALA was Chris Grosset, NuALA, FCSLA, a partner and senior consultant with NVision InSight Group, an Indigenous Consulting firm based in Ottawa and Iqaluit.

The evening began with an informal meet and greet where guests had the opportunity to mingle and meet Chris before the lecture. The lecture was well-attended and included local landscape architects, planners, architects and many members of the general public. Over the course of an hour, Chris presented those in attendance with an introduction to the process of “truth and reconciliation.” Using unique project and personal experiences throughout Nunavut as examples, Chris was able to illustrate his “path” toward understanding and appreciating Indigenous perspectives. He discussed his journey toward acknowledging a state of reconciliation and how that has influenced his principles and his practice. Chris’s review of his experience and impressive body of work was illuminating and certainly successful in creating awareness of the profession of landscape architecture and the breadth of work that landscape architects are doing. Many left the lecture feeling refreshed and inspired with many thoughtful and supportive comments being received in the days that followed.

Overall the event was a success and proved to be an excellent avenue to advance the practice and profession of landscape architecture in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada.
